TEDx UTD "Thriving" | Adam Howard - How to Foster Individual Dignity and Wellness
Master Adam Howard earned his bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from The University of Texas at Dallas as well as an associate degree in liberal arts from Collin County Community College. He went on to complete an ScM in Medical Sciences at Brown University where his work focused on improving screening rates of community health center patients at high risk for diabetic retinopathy. He has previously served as a junior fellow of The Brain Sciences Foundation and as a logistics officer for Make-a-Mind Co. where he worked with technology startups to support the application of computational neuroscience to early diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative pathology. In addition to teaching Taekwondo, Master Howard regularly delivers instruction on leadership, communication, philosophy, and other topics. He also curates the Servant Leadership Community, a group founded in 2017 to promote the values of authenticity, wellness, purpose, and service. Localizing Justice and Privatizing the Right to Punish | John Taden | TEDxUTD
Hearing about mob justice is one thing, witnessing one is another. John Taden of the University of Texas at Dallas takes us through the anatomy of an angry mob, revealing at the end that in the wake of the on-going xenophobic attacks in South Africa, everyone is asking but the wrong questions. Taden, a native of Ghana, is passionate about ending mob justice and is working on an on-going data tracking project that tracks and stores data on violent mob attacks across Africa. Brain Science for Investment Decisions | Daniel Krawczyk | TEDxUTD
Financial investment allows for individuals to build their wealth and ensure financial security. In this talk, neuroscientist and author Dr. Daniel Krawczyk reveals how our brain can impact investment and provides valuable tips on how you can become a better investor. Daniel Krawczyk is a Professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences and holds the Francis Chair in Brain Health at The University of Texas at Dallas. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He authored the book Reasoning: The Neuroscience of How We Think in 2017, a comprehensive guide to research on human reasoning. He also co-authored a forthcoming book called Understanding Behavioral BIA$ with financial manager George Baxter, a guide to improving financial decisions. His research is focused on understanding reasoning and decision making through a multi-disciplinary approach that combines brain imaging, cognitivepsychology, and studies of individuals who have sustained brain injuries. He has investigated the brain basis of reasoning both healthy people and individuals with disorders including dementia, brain injury, and autism spectrum disorders. He has led multiple Department of Defense-funded research studies evaluating people’s improvements in thinking and cognitive performance. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles and was a Ruth L. Kirschstein Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. The Case of the Disappearing Languages | Anwesha Bhattacharjee | TEDxUTD
With disappearing languages becoming more prevalent in the world, Anwesha Bhattacharjee discusses the necessity of fighting for mother languages! Anwesha Bhattacharjee grew up in New Delhi, India. She received her bachelors in Computer Science Engineering. She and her team were a finalist at the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2010 in Warsaw where they placed third in the "Envision 2020" competition for an innovative technology proposal for food monitoring and delivery in war-ravaged areas of the world. Anwesha moved to Dallas in August 2010. As a Ph.D. student at UT Dallas, she worked under Prof. Vijay Mookerjee on advertising optimization models for Facebook and on empirical research. Anwesha joined The Mercury, the college newspaper in 2010, where she started out as a contributing reporter. She continued on to serve as the newspaper’s Features Editor and Web Editor for four years, winning several state and national awards in collegiate journalism in that time. She also co-produced an award-winning podcast and a TV series for Student Media. A trained classical dancer, she has been an active member and choreographer for the Bangladesh Student Organization at UTD. She has also blogged for The Dallas Morning News. She is currently working full time as a senior Data Scientist at Sabre in Southlake, TX. To Kill the Monster - Empowered Treatment of Eating Disorders | Steven Dunn | TEDxUTD
Steven Dunn has been an attorney for over 30 years but he takes a break from the court room to discuss something that's close to close to his hear: the tool of eating disorders and how we can raise awareness to save lives. Steven Dunn is an attorney with thirty-two years of courtroom experience. In addition to appearing in state and federal courts throughout the State of Texas, he has appeared as lead attorney in at least twenty different federal courts outside the State of Texas. He has been heavily involved in the eating disorder industry and community for at least eight years. When his daughter passed away as a result of severe eating disorders in October of 2016, he dedicated his life to raising awareness for others. He opened the first Texas chapter of Project HEAL, a non profit foundation raising funds for treatment of eating disorders and started The Morgan Foundation, a foundation dedicated to raising funds for research and study of the biological causes of eating disorders. My Story of Surviving Sexual Abuse & How To Prevent this Silent Killer | Jenna Quinn | TEDxUTD
Jenna Quinn is a sexual abuse survivor and the driving force behind "Jenna's Law" that requires school districts, daycare centers, foster care centers, and child placing agencies to educate children and adults on how to recognize, prevent, and report abuse and sex trafficking. Jenna Quinn is a child sexual abuse survivor, author, and the force behind Jenna’s Law. Jenna’s Law was the first child sexual abuse prevention education law in the United States named after a survivor to require that each school district adopt and implement a prevention policy that educates students, teachers, and parents on the likely warning signs of sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and how to report. Now, over half the country has passed some form of legislation since Jenna’s Law in 2009. With a master’s degree in communication studies, she is a sought-after speaker who has traveled nationwide, educating and sharing her inspiring story with legislatures, law-enforcement, abuse-prevention groups, schools, communities of faith, nonprofit organizations, and the general public for over twelve years. She has participated in both local and national radio, television, and news programs, and she has dedicated her life to preventing child sexual abuse through education and legislation. Bringing Virtual Reality Home | Ryan McMahan | TEDxUTD
With the advent of virtual reality technologies like the Oculus Rift, it has gained a lot of enthusiasm. There is still a lot more to be explored in virtual reality, however. In Ryan McMahan's talk, he discusses the challenges his lab faces with virtual reality and what it takes to make it more mainstream. Dr. Ryan P. McMahan is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas, where his research focuses on the effects of system fidelity for virtual reality (VR) applications and systems. In his Future Immersive Virtual Environments (FIVE) lab, wireless head-mounted displays (HMDs) and a motion tracking system are used to create high-fidelity VR applications that include head-tracked stereoscopic graphics, 3D sound localization, and tactile feedback via wireless handheld controllers. Dr. McMahan’s current research focuses on the effects of system fidelity for learning and training transfer. This research involves identifying a learning objective, building a VR application to train the tasks involved, and evaluating the amount of training transfer that occurs through objective and subjective measurements. Bridging Communities Through Indigenous Performance | Thomas Riccio | TEDxUTD

Arts & Performance Professor, Thomas Riccio analyzes and reflects on what indigenous performance can teach us about building a sense of community. Thomas Riccio is a post-disciplinary performance artist and Professor of Performance and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has directed over one hundred plays at American regional theatres, off-off and off Broadway and has worked extensively in the area of indigenous performance conducting research and/or creating performances in: South Africa, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Kenya, Europe, Russia, Siberia, Korea, China, and Alaska. The Peoples Republic of Sakha (central Siberia) declared him a “Cultural Hero”. His writings on performance, ritual, shamanism, and robotics have appeared in numerous international journals, books, and magazines. He is the Poo Pah Doo of Dead White Zombies, a Dallas-based experimental, post-disciplinary performance and media group that utilizes ritual, indigenous and immersion expressions.
